Mitch and I are hitting the road tomorrow! We both have astronomically busy Falls coming our way so we decided to take a week off work to spend some quality time together. I'll be chronicling my adventures on the blog, facebook and instagram. Hopefully it provides helpful information to anyone thinking of doing the same or encourages you to go on an adventure of your own!
This post is about THE PLAN, mainly focused on the route, lodging and our itinerary. We decided on a Seattle to The Bay road trip. Easy enough, right?! Well, it turns out there are a MILLION ways to do a trip like this and it took us a whole week's worth of evenings to pull this together. We started by making a list of big ticket to-do's to help us prioritize.
We want to see beautiful nature things!
1. Crater Lake 2. The Redwoods 3. Big Sur
Attractions in the area!
4. Hearst Castle
5. Monterey Bay Aquarium
Naija time!
6. Kunmi and Emeka!
Mitch and I have each spent a fair amount of time in San Francisco, so we decided to skip it this time. It's so easy to fly into SFO from SEA anyways! After locking down places we wanted to see, the next step was planning our route. We are doing the trip in 11 days, so heavy emphasis on the ROAD part of this trip. It was important to us to keep the driving efficient and reasonable. We managed to plan such that we only have 1 big driving day (11 hours!) right at the beginning of the trip. That allowed us time to meander back up the coast line, driving between 2 - 4 hours on each of the other days. Check out our itinerary and map at the end of the post.
For lodging, we are doing something a little different and using Airbnb. Airbnb is a site that connects you to other folks that are renting out their rooms, apartments, bungalows, castles or whatever! We tried it for the first on our Portland trip last weekend and absolutely LOVED it. The private guest house was much cheaper than a traditional hotel and it was a lot nicer than the type of hotels we usually stay at. To top it off, our hosts were so sweet. It felt like we were being pampered by friends! Check out the list of Airbnb's that we've booked for our trip and if you feel compelled, here's $25 to sign up for your own Airbnb account! Cheap sleep in Portland, $40 Cheap sleep in Sunnyvale, $65 Adorable tiny guest house in Cambria, $89 Cheap sleep in Seaside, $67 Cheap sleep in Sebastopol, $69 Super insane but super awesome room in Arcata, $75 Entire apartment in North Bend, $69 Cheap sleep in Cloverdale, $65 Amazing private guest house in Vancouver, $74
After cleaning and service fees, our total lodging costs comes to just about $800. $400 per person for 10 nights?! Not too bad!!
